Neighbours of the Lafarge Canada cement plant in Exshaw, near Canmore, have recently filed a legal class action against the facility, claiming that they are being bombarded with carcinogenic dust and noise. According to the plaintiffs from the surrounding areas, the plant has been a source of annoyance for several years, but problems have intensified since its expansion in 2016. The residents complain of huge clouds of cement dust regularly leaving the plant and covering nearby properties. They also report severe odours and claim that daily blasts from the plant’s mining operations cause their homes to shake violently. Additionally, they contend that property values have been negatively affected.
While none of the allegations have been proven in court, the legal action raises serious concerns about the environmental impact of the cement plant and its effects on local communities. The case highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability from companies in the industrial sector.
