What Are PFAS?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large, complex group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in consumer products since the 1940s. They have been used to make nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain resistant fabrics and carpets, some cosmetics, some firefighting foams, and products that resist grease, water, and oil.
How Are PFAS Harmful?
Often referred to as “forever chemicals”, PFAS are very persistent in the environment and in the human body. This means that they do not break down and can accumulate over time. There is evidence linking PFAS to negative health effects in humans including various types of cancer, reproductive problems, weakened childhood immunity, increased cholesterol, liver damage, and thyroid disease, among many others.
PFAS in Canada
PFAS are widespread in Canada, having been measured in soil, plants, air, wildlife, and drinking water. Consequently, over 99% of people tested in Canada have PFAS in their blood.
PFAS can be released into the environment at every stage of a product’s lifecycle – during the manufacturing process, during use, and even after disposal. A main source of PFAS in the environment is firefighting foam. For decades, PFAS-containing foams were used during firefighting training at airports and military bases across Canada. The federal government estimates that over 100 federal sites are contaminated with PFAS from firefighting foam, with these substances often migrating through ground and surface water, contaminating nearby areas.
First Nations PFAS Litigation
In line with our commitment to justice and accountability, Napoli Shkolnik Canada has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of all First Nations in Canada. The lawsuit targets PFAS manufacturers, accusing them of years of deception and negligence regarding the dangers of their products, which have polluted First Nations water supplies, forcing communities to incur significant abatement and remediation costs. The case aims to hold these companies accountable and demand justice for the environmental damage and financial burden inflicted on First Nations.
